The lifer escaped to Nevada

Prison

The head of the Nevada Department of Corrections has resigned at the request of the US state’s governor after it was revealed that a lifer not only escaped from prison, but that it was not investigated for four full days.

Governor Steve Sisolak “requested and received the resignation of Director of Corrections, Charles Daniels, effective immediately, and six corrections officers were suspended.”

Porfirio Duarte-Herrera, sentenced to life in prison for the 2007 bombing, escaped on September 23 from the South Desert prison near Las Vegas. No one noticed that this happened for four days.

Duarte-Herrera, 42, was caught in the middle of Las Vegas on Wednesday night, trying to board a bus that would take him out of town.

The “South Desert” camp is classified as a medium-security facility, and its administration did not announce Duarte-Herrera’s disappearance until Tuesday.

He was sentenced to life in prison for using a homemade, remotely activated device to detonate outside a Las Vegas casino, killing one person.

Las Vegas police said they received a tip Wednesday evening that a person matching the description of the fugitive was in their area. The suspect was arrested and his identity confirmed.
