Italy in elections, citizens cast their votes in the box

Election

Italy is voting to elect a new government. Polling stations opened at 7am on Sunday and will remain open until 11pm.

There are about 51 million Italian citizens with the right to vote, 4.7 million of whom have already voted from abroad.

Also, 51 percent of voters are women, while 2.6 million are adults who will vote for the Senate for the first time.

The right-wing grouping, made up of the parties Northern League, Forza Italia and Brothers of Italy and led by Giorgia Meloni, who claims to become Italy’s first female prime minister, is in the running this week.

On the other hand is the 5 Star Movement, now led by Giuseppe Conte, who aims to regain the post of prime minister, which he held for three years.

The chairman of the left Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, who led the country in the period 2013-2014, is in a similar position.
