Facebook failed to block conspiracy theories.
While social media companies promise to crack down on Russian misinformation about aggression in Ukraine, studies show they continue to fail, allowing such narratives to reach millions of people.
And in that regard, Facebook failed to tag 80% of the articles on its platform that promote a rapidly spreading conspiracy theory that the US is funding the use of biological weapons in Ukraine, according to a study published Friday by the Center for Digital Hate (CCDH).
The nonprofit disinformation research group studied a sample of posts from February 24 to March 14 that shared foreign articles containing baseless claims about biological weapons.
He found that in 80% of cases, Facebook failed to label posts as “missing context”, containing “partially false information” or “false information”.
The theory of bioarms began to spread in the early days of the war against Ukraine, among smaller accounts, eventually making its way to larger platforms.
The White House has condemned the allegation, saying it may have been produced by Moscow to justify a possible use of chemical weapons against Ukraine.
