Nagelsmann Reveals World Cup Squad Newcomer Celebrates Comeback

Germany’s national coach, Julian Nagelsmann, announced the squad for the World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada on Thursday. As has been circulating previously, Manuel Neuer is expected to return to the goalkeeper role for the German squad after a two-year break.

In a press conference in Frankfurt, Nagelsmann confirmed that Germany plans to feature Neuer as the number one keeper. He noted that everyone recognizes Neuer’s “aura and qualities” stating that the goalkeeper deserves to participate and accepting his commitment to play in another tournament.

The goalkeeper roster will also include current regular keepers Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel. Additionally, although he is not officially named in the squad, Jonas Urbig of FC Bayern Munich is listed to travel with the team, primarily to provide support during training sessions, according to Nagelsmann.

For the defensive line, Nagelsmann nominated Waldemar Anton, Nathaniel Brown, Pascal Groß, Joshua Kimmich, Felix Nmecha, Aleksandar Pavlovic, David Raum, Antonio Rüdiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, Angelo Stiller, Jonathan Tah, and Malick Thiaw.

The midfielder and attacking positions feature Nadiem Amiri, Maximilian Beier, Leon Goretzka, Kai Havertz, Lennart Karl, Jamie Leweling, Jamal Musiala, Leroy Sané, Deniz Undav, Florian Wirtz, and Nick Woltemade.

The tournament begins on June 11th with Mexico hosting South Africa. Germany’s first match will be on June 14th against the surprise participants, Curacao. Subsequently, the squad is scheduled to play against Ivory Coast (June 20th) and Ecuador (June 25th). The primary goal for the German team is to successfully complete the group stage. (Germany failed to reach the knockout rounds in both 2022 and 2018.)
