Wadephul Calls for New Burden Sharing in NATO Defense Alliance

Prior to his departure for the NATO Foreign Ministers meeting in Helsingborg, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) advocated for a revised burden-sharing model within the defense alliance. He stated on Thursday that “as European capabilities rise, the tasks within the alliance must also shift. Our goal is a new burden distribution that reflects the economic and military potential of Germany and Europe”.

He also highlighted the need to set clear security priorities for Europe within the NATO framework. The Foreign Minister noted the crucial role of Ukraine, stating that “for more than four years, Ukraine has made the greatest contribution to European security outside the bloc through its heroic struggle against Russia’s war of aggression”. Wadephul intends to present concrete proposals in Sweden regarding how Germany can continue to powerfully support Ukraine’s defense of freedom in Europe, and how Germany can, in return, benefit from the impressive achievements of the Ukrainian armaments industry.

Furthermore, the situation in the Middle East was a key focus of his address. The CDU politician emphasized that “our efforts, together with the countries in the region, concern the free, safe, and unhindered passage of all ships and thus the global supply security of humanity”. He concluded by announcing that Germany is ready, alongside over 30 other states, to take an active role in international efforts aimed at securing the Strait of Hormuz.
