German Government Pushing Swift Stability Amid Bulgarian Political Formation

Following the parliamentary election in Bulgaria, the German federal government is hoping for a swift formation of a new administration. According to a spokesperson for the Foreign Office who spoke to the dts news agency on Monday, “We hope that a stable government can be formed quickly in Sofia. Because in difficult times, we need reliable partners in the European Union to tackle the numerous challenges that we must address together”. This expectation also extends to the government formation process in Bulgaria.

When asked whether the German government anticipated potential blockages at the EU level due to the election winner, Rumen Radew, who is perceived as pro-Russian, the spokesperson stated that such speculation is premature at this time. However, they added that, in principle, they assume it remains possible, as it has been in the past, to maintain a strong and united European stance through dialogue with all European partners, and to ensure a strong NATO alongside a defense-capable Ukraine.

During Sunday’s election, the electoral alliance of former head of state Radew achieved a surprisingly significant success. After counting a large portion of the votes, their share stood at around 44.7 percent, suggesting they likely secured an absolute majority in parliament. The conservative Gerb-SDS bloc reached approximately 13.4 percent, while the liberal-conservative PP-DB bloc placed third with 12.7 percent.
