EU Digital Euro Vote Delayed Sparks Speculation Among Tech Enthusiasts

The vote on the digital euro scheduled for the European Parliament in May is expected to be postponed. According to the “Handelsblatt” (Tuesday edition), citing several individuals familiar with the matter, the most probable date for the vote in the relevant Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs is now June 23rd, though June 3rd is also a possibility. The entire European Parliament might hold the vote in July. Previously, the date slated for the Committee was May 5th, and for the main plenary session, it was May 26th.

Several issues remain unresolved, according to insiders. Key points of contention include balancing privacy concerns with measures designed to prevent money laundering, as well as determining whether the digital euro will be distributed through the ECB or directly by commercial banks. Furthermore, there is debate regarding the maximum amount of money users can hold in digital euros, and the appropriate level of fees that banks can charge merchants when accepting payments made with the digital euro.
