Fuel prices at German gas stations saw a noticeable decrease on May 1st, though the reduction was not as extensive as the full “fuel discount” that had been anticipated.
Morning averages showed diesel priced at €2.07 per liter and Super E10 at €1.98 per liter. This marked a drop of approximately 13 cents per liter compared to average prices recorded on the previous day, when diesel was roughly €2.20 and Super E10 was about €2.11.
However, the public availability of gas prices reflects a continuously deepening decline in the early hours, which is largely due to temporary state measures. By temporarily suspending energy taxes on diesel and gasoline, wholesalers are required to remit €0.1404 less to the state. When factoring in the resulting removal of VAT, the total tax burden on the fuel drops by €0.167 per liter.
This state-mandated discount is set to remain in place for two months, which is expected to save the federal budget an estimated 1.6 billion euros.
