The Sozialverband Deutschland (SoVD) is strongly pushing for the swift implementation of the planned reforms to emergency medical care. Michaela Engelmeier, the head of SoVD, told the “Rheinische Post” that the emergency care reform must be implemented immediately, warning that it cannot be postponed any further. She noted that emergency departments have been operating at maximum capacity for years, and the on-call service provided by the local medical associations is often inadequate. According to Engelmeier, the reform of emergency care is long overdue. Furthermore, she emphasized that the reform must be designed with the needs of the patients in mind, particularly since patients are laypersons facing personal emergencies. The SoVD chief stated that emergency and acute care services must be consistently available everywhere, around the clock, and capable of providing immediate, targeted, and needs-appropriate care to anyone seeking help. Meanwhile, Federal Health Minister Nina Warken (CDU) plans to reduce the number of cases treated at hospital emergency rooms, which is projected to result in savings exceeding one billion euros. She will detail these plans at midday on Wednesday.
