German Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche (CDU) stressed the importance of a strong industrial sector for Germany and Europe in a period of global uncertainty.
On Friday in Berlin she said that, despite existing differences between politics, trade unions and businesses, cooperation is essential to secure the country’s position. Germany and Europe need an innovative industry capable of competing globally and investing domestically.
Reiche outlined five key areas for strengthening the industry:
1. “Improve site conditions” – this includes competitive energy prices, reduced bureaucracy and an investment‑friendly regulatory framework.
2. “Secure skilled personnel” – a robust dual apprenticeship system, ongoing workplace training, and greater availability of study and training spots in STEM fields are critical.
3. “Accelerate innovation” – the industry should adopt technologies such as artificial intelligence.
4. “Diversify supply chains and raw‑material sources” – to reduce dependencies.
5. “Strengthen Europe economically” – by dismantling trade barriers and making fuller use of the internal market.
Reiche stated that Germany is at an “industrial turning point” and that industry remains the foundation of prosperity and value creation. Even in the face of challenges such as falling sales and rising insolvencies, she emphasised the need to actively shape the industrial future.
