Andreas Stoch Announces Immediate Resignation as Baden-Württemberg SPD Leader After Electoral Debacle

After the sharp electoral collapse of the SPD in the Baden‑Wuerttemberg state election, top candidate Andreas Stoch announced his immediate resignation as both state party leader and parliamentary group chair. He made the announcement on election night.

Preliminary vote projections from ARD and ZDF show the Social Democrats securing only 5.5 percent of the vote in the state. The Greens lead with an estimated 31.8 percent, followed closely by the CDU at 29.8 percent, positioning Green Party co‑leader Özdemir as the likely candidate for the premiership in a continuation of the green‑black coalition. While the CDU could mathematically partner with the AfD, who forecast 17.8 percent, the Christian Democrats have ruled out such an alliance.

The FDP falls below the 5 percent threshold with 4.5 percent, and the Left also fails to reach parliament with the same share.
