Germany Belgium Push EU For Tougher Drug Crime Laws

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a joint initiative with Belgium to bolster European Union efforts against organized crime and drug trafficking.

Speaking after a meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever on Tuesday, Chancellor Merz highlighted the close and collaborative relationship between the two nations. He specifically cited recent successful cooperation between their respective internal security agencies in combating organized criminal activity and illicit drug smuggling.

“This is an issue we discussed, particularly concerning the collaboration between the major ports of Hamburg, Rotterdam and Antwerp” the Chancellor stated. He further indicated a desire to forge an alliance and advocate for new standards within the European Union framework.

Initial consultations have already taken place, involving the cities directly impacted by these criminal networks, according to the Chancellor’s office. The partnership aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation and address the escalating challenges posed by organized crime and drug trafficking within Europe.
