Bundestag Member on the Brink of Losing Seat

In a potential shake-up, German Bundestag member Ralf Stegner may be set to lose his seat in the Parliamentary Control Committee (PKGr) due to his co-authorship of the controversial Russia manifesto of the SPD, according to a report by Bild am Sonntag, citing Bundestag sources. The manifesto, which Stegner and other SPD politicians signed, called for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Sources close to the Bundestag have revealed that Stegner has since faced strong opposition in the PKGr, with the SPD Bundestag faction now planning not to nominate him for the upcoming election on Thursday. Instead, the party is considering nominating two women, Marja-Liisa Völlers, who is currently a member of the PKGr and Sonja Eichwede, according to Bild am Sonntag, citing faction sources.

When approached for comment, the SPD faction declined to make a statement, while Stegner referred to the pending decision in the faction’s meeting on Tuesday.
