European Leaders Must Take a Tougher Stance, Says Former German MP
In the midst of peace talks in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, Rolf Mützenich, a former chair of the German Social Democratic Party’s parliamentary group, has criticized the European Union’s perceived weakness in dealing with US President Donald Trump. Mützenich emphasized the need for Germany to maintain a connection with Moscow.
While acknowledging Trump’s unpredictable nature, Mützenich told the Stern newspaper, “He shows us that, in addition to military support for Ukraine, we have not done enough to prepare the diplomatic field from the start. This was a mistake from the beginning.”
When asked if Trump was more effective than others in Europe, Mützenich replied, “It’s hard to say. Sometimes it seems like he’s on our side, only to fall back on us a few hours later. What bothers me, however, are the whiny statements from Europe about Trump.”
Mützenich stressed the importance of making Ukraine defense-capable and providing social and economic support to the attacked country. He does not believe that he will live to see a return to relaxed relations with Russia. “But we should already be discussing in Germany that it’s necessary to maintain a connection with Moscow” he said.
The Social Democrat wants to live in a world that strives for cooperation, coexistence and peaceful relationships. He also believes that other challenges, such as climate goals, cannot be achieved without Russia’s involvement.
