Merz Demands Bundeswehr Must Be Ready to Fight Tonight Boosts Defense Spending

CDU candidate Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for continuous, substantial investment in the German Armed Forces. Speaking at the military training ground in Munster, Niedersachsen, following a military demonstration, Merz stated that Germany must be deterrent and defensively ready right now, and “capable of fighting tonight”. He stressed that achieving this level of readiness would require the “greatest effort” from the country.

Shifting focus from earlier political confrontations, Merz appeared to be adopting a reconciliatory tone regarding relations with Washington. He affirmed that the military nuclear program in Iran must be brought to an end. This came after US President Donald Trump had previously criticized Merz, claiming he had “no idea” and threatening a reduction of troops from Germany. Merz had, himself, previously suggested that the US lacked a defined strategy for the war in Iran.

Despite these differences, Merz reiterated his commitment to maintaining close and trusting contacts with key partners, specifically naming Washington. He confirmed that Germany is prepared to engage militarily in regions like the Gulf to “ensure the freedom of sea lanes” provided the necessary prerequisites are met.
