Greens Blame Merz For Trump's US Troop Threat

Defense policy expert Sara Nanni, a member of the Green Party, criticized Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) following US President Donald Trump’s threat to withdraw American troops from Germany. Speaking to the news portal “T-Online” Nanni argued that this open threat from Trump could have been avoided if clear and open discussions had taken place behind the scenes. She asserted that the US requires NATO, just as NATO requires the US, and suggested that it was time for someone to clearly address the situation with Trump.

Nanni further urged Merz to stop complaining about difficult times and instead utilize the power he might hold as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany in the best interest of the nation. She stated that “Trump’s vague threats must finally be countered intelligently”.

The Green politician expressed concern that, since Trump took office in January 2025, the federal government had failed to establish a coherent plan for dealing with his political unreliability. She demanded that the Merz government stop fluctuating between overly soft and overly hard approaches and instead work toward developing a solid strategy.
