Center-right AD Alliance Leads in Portuguese Election, But Falls Short of Majority

In Portugal, the center-right alliance Aliança Democrática (AD) led by Prime Minister Luis Montenegro is leading in the parliamentary elections. According to initial projections, AD is expected to receive between 29.1% and 35.1% of the vote. The second place is closely contested, with the Social Democratic Party (PS) projected to secure between 19.4% and 25.4% of the vote and the far-right party Chega expected to garner between 19.5% and 25.5% of the vote.

In the last parliamentary elections just over a year ago, the PS was nearly neck-and-neck with AD. Despite the clear lead, AD is projected to fall short of the absolute majority again. Montenegro has been governing with a minority government so far. Portugal has already held three parliamentary elections since early 2022.
