Bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz, representing the CDU, has pledged continued military support for Ukraine during his visit to Kyiv. He emphasized the close coordination with European partners and the United States in this regard. Regarding the potential delivery of Taurus cruise missiles, Merz stated, “We support Ukraine militarily to the extent that we can and are able to do so, in order for this war to end.” Moving forward, discussions about specific weapon deliveries will no longer be held publicly. Merz explained that “under my leadership, the debate about weapons deliveries, calibers, weapon systems and so on will be taken out of the public sphere.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged the legitimate interest of the population in these matters. Merz further clarified that decisions concerning the type and scope of military assistance will continue to be made in the cabinet and in close consultation with international partners.
