Sebastian Fiedler, the interior policy spokesperson for the SPD parliamentary group, has demanded increased protection for Jewish life within Germany. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, he stated that there is a “dramatic development” whenever a large portion of the Jewish community withdraws from public life out of fear, such as by foregoing the wearing of Kippahs or Stars of David, calling this situation a serious warning sign.
According to Fiedler, concerted action is necessary to ensure that German society remains open and tolerant. He emphasized the need to openly declare the grave problems presented by both right-wing and left-wing antisemitism, insisting that the state must confront these issues using every available means of the rule of law. He believes that the proposed tightening of criminal law concerning the dissemination of hate speech will be crucial in making these actions effective.
The SPD politician also stressed that security forces and authorities must do everything possible to ensure that Jewish people feel safe in Germany. Furthermore, he pointed to political education as a central pillar in the fight against antisemitism. In summary, Fiedler affirmed that the protection of Jewish life and solidarity with the Jewish community “must be guaranteed in our country”.
