Vizekanzler Lars Klingbeil of the SPD addressed reporters at a May rally in Bergkamen, commenting on the initial appearance of the fuel discount. He stated that the reports he received indicated that fuel prices had decreased, adding that the federal government would monitor the situation closely.
Speaking to RTL and ntv, Klingbeil demanded that the oil companies pass the full two-month discount benefit along to consumers. “I have a clear expectation that the 17 cents will be passed on” he stated, asserting that the industry is now obligated to do so, citing tightened antitrust laws.
When questioned about how the government plans to manage the situation if high prices persist after the current subsidies expire, Klingbeil shifted the focus to negotiations in Iran. He expressed hope for a peaceful resolution and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While acknowledging the need to wait for developments, he maintained that the government would be able to make new decisions, should the necessity arise. However, he cautioned that any discussion of future policy would be purely speculative, noting he could not forecast the government’s direction at this time.
Furthermore, the SPD leader reiterated his support for an “excess profit tax”. Klingbeil argued that where corporations profit at the expense of the public during a crisis, the government must “seize those profits” and redistribute them to the citizens.
