Part of the stage collapsed in strong winds at a music festival in Spain, killing one person and injuring dozens.

Strong winds toppled parts of the Medusa Festival stage structure at around 4am local time.

About 40 people were taken to hospital, including three with serious injuries.

Organizers of the six-day festival said they had ordered the concert grounds cleared when the wind intensified.

“We are devastated and saddened by what happened this morning,” organizers said in a statement on the festival’s Facebook page.

DJ Miguel Serna was performing on the main stage when the incident occurred.

“It was a tense few minutes, I’ve never experienced anything like this before,” he wrote in an Instagram post on Saturday. The tragedy happened right at the end of my performance on the main stage, there were some terrifying moments, I’m still in shock”.

Images circulating online show strong winds blowing through crowds at the outdoor festival, where French DJ David Guetta was due to play on Saturday.

Spain’s National Meteorological Agency AEMET said overnight strong winds reached 82 kilometers per hour at Alicante airport in the Valencia region.
