Macron: The conditions set by Putin are unacceptable.
French President Emmanuel Macron said that the conditions set by Russian President Vladimir Putin for a ceasefire in Ukraine “are not acceptable to anyone.”
“I do not see a diplomatic solution in the coming hours or even days,” Macron told reporters in Versailles ahead of a summit of the European Union leaders focusing on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, energy price hikes and less dependence on Russian gas and oil.
Macron said he thinks a ceasefire cant be reached in Ukraine in the coming hours. “I’m definitely optimistic, but I have to be realistic,” he said.
Speaking of Ukraine’s demand for swift EU accession, Macron told reporters: “With a country at war? I do not think so… Should we close the door and say “never”? “That would be unfair.”
The French president said the war in Ukraine was a “tragedy… a human, political and humanitarian tragedy”, but added that “it will lead to a complete redefinition of Europe’s architecture”.
Otherwise, Putin had a telephone conversation with Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
