The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is continuing to expand its lead in voter favorability, as measured by Forsa, maintaining a clear advantage over the Union (CDU/CSU). According to the weekly poll for RTL and ntv, the AfD gained one percentage point compared to the previous week, reaching 28 percent, marking the highest recorded figure for the party nationwide by Forsa.
The Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/CSU bloc remains in second place with an unchanged 22 percent. Meanwhile, the Greens lost one point, falling to 14 percent, while the BSW reached 3 percent for the first time since March. Support figures remained stable for the SPD (12 percent), Die Linke (11 percent), and the FDP (4 percent).
In assessments of political competence, the AfD is also leading and increased its gap with the Union bloc. It currently stands at 15 percent, gaining one point. The CDU and CSU, by contrast, lost a point, now sitting at 13 percent. Regarding which party is most likely to solve the country’s problems, the Greens, SPD, and Linke remained stable at 8, 5, and 4 percent respectively. However, a majority of 53 percent of respondents stated that no single party is best equipped to overcome the country’s current difficulties.
Concerning the performance of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), only 14 percent of citizens reported satisfaction with his work. Furthermore, 85 percent (+1 point) expressed dissatisfaction. Criticism was also evident within the CDU/CSU party base, where a majority-57 percent-of supporters were dissatisfied with the chancellor’s actions.
The data was collected from 2,000 people surveyed between May 12th and May 18th.
