Ines Schwerdtner, the party chairwoman for The Left, indicated that her party could support a potential minority government involving the CDU in Saxony-Anhalt, provided that the CDU commits to shifting its social policies in the direction of The Left. Speaking to the TV station “Welt” she added that, “We will do everything to keep the AfD away from the levers of power. I can tell you that”.
According to Schwerdtner, the public cares not who ends up in the final coalition talks, but rather “What changes for the country?”
She criticized the CDU’s continued unwillingness to cooperate with The Left, calling it a mistake. She emphasized that the main priority must be pushing through left-wing political concepts, especially as a counterweight to the AfD’s agenda. “We will defend democracy, but we will primarily fight for the well-being of people in this country, and we will use every vote for that purpose. With us, there will be no deterioration or cuts to the social sector. With us, this type of policy will not happen. My feelings on the CDU’s decision are irrelevant; I find it laughably inconsistent. For me, the question is: what is improved for the people in the country?”
Shwerdtner concluded by stating that the CDU must decide its direction. She made their position clear: “We are for improvements in the country. This means better educational policy in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and free years in kindergarten”.
