Merz Pushes Stronger EU Swiss Ties After Swiss Meeting

During a meeting with Swiss Federal President Guy Parmelin, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) expressed his strong support for deepening and modernizing the agreements between the European Union and Switzerland, emphasizing that such moves benefit both sides. Merz stressed the mutual dependence of both economies on exports and open global trade routes with low tariffs.

Furthermore, Merz pointed out the severe economic damage posed by the Iranian blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that they are committed to working with their partners to restore the freedom of these vital sea lanes as quickly as possible.

Beyond trade concerns, the Chancellor also noted the need to expand bilateral cooperation and infrastructure. He pointed as an example to the Pfaffensteig Tunnel, whose construction is beginning this year and is intended to improve connectivity in the border region and connect it to the new Stuttgart main train station. Merz concluded by emphasizing that while this tunnel is beneficial, several other infrastructure projects are also of critical importance for maintaining competitiveness.
