The European Parliament has temporarily halted fraud investigations concerning CSU Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Angelika Niebler. This decision came after a majority of MEPs in Strasbourg rejected an application from the European Public Prosecutor’s Office seeking to lift Niebler’s immunity.
At the heart of the matter are allegations that Niebler used staff paid by the EU Parliament between 2017 and 2025 to perform tasks unrelated to her duties as an MEP. Niebler has vehemently denied the accusations, which originated from a former employee.
Earlier, the Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee had already ruled against lifting her immunity in early May. The committee justified its stance by stating that the complaints were filed on the basis of a “direct political motive”.
Niebler, who has been a member of the European Parliament since 1999, also serves as the Deputy Chairwoman of the Christian Social Union (CSU).
