Miersch Advocates Price Cap for Soaring Gas Prices

Matthias Miersch, the chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, expressed his support for implementing a price cap on fuel in the event of persistently high gas prices. Speaking to the television channel “Welt” on Monday, Miersch stated, “For me, price caps are absolutely not out of the question”. The SPD politician stressed the need for the government to prepare for the coming months, emphasizing that since no one knows how the conflict with Iran might develop, the federal government cannot fail in its crisis intervention efforts and must be prepared.

Regarding the recent proposal from Bavarian Minister-President and CSU chairman Markus Söder-to consider extending the fuel discount due to continuously high gas prices-Miersch was cautious. He dismissed the idea of such measures being repeated indefinitely, commenting that “this watering can cannot be used for months or years”. Therefore, he argued that careful consideration must be given to determining appropriate measures in the future. Miersch also added that the fuel discount, contrary to initial criticism, has been passed on to motorists.
