A recent survey conducted by the Insa Institute, reported by “Bild”, suggests that nearly every second German citizen would prefer the current “black-red” coalition government to end prematurely. According to the poll, 49 percent of respondents stated that the Union and SPD should conclude their partnership before its scheduled end in early 2029. Conversely, 32 percent indicated that the coalition should continue governing. The remaining 19 percent were either unable to form an opinion or did not answer the question.
Further analysis showed geographical differences in opinion. Eastern Germans expressed a significantly stronger desire for an early dissolution than their western counterparts. In East Germany, 57 percent wished for the “black-red” government to end early, while 29 percent supported its continuation. In Western Germany, the percentage advocating for an early end was 47 percent, compared to 33 percent who wished for the coalition to remain in power.
For this study, Insa polled 1,003 eligible voters between May 8 and May 11, 2026, asking them directly: “Should the black-red federal government continue to rule, or separate early and dissolve the coalition?”
