Dirk Peglow, the Chairman of the German Police Association (BDK), stated that Germany is currently ill-equipped to combat cybercrime. Addressing the issue with the “Redaktionetzwerk Deutschland” Peglow highlighted that local police stations still suffer from significant deficits regarding cybercrime capabilities. He emphasized that cybercrime is no longer a fringe issue; instead, it affects companies, critical infrastructure, governmental agencies, and citizens equally. According to Peglow, many police precincts lack both the necessary technical equipment and the specialized training required to tackle the current threat landscape. Speaking on the occasion of the federal cybercrime situation report presentation by Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU), the BDK head called for several systemic improvements. Specifically, he demanded better technical resources, increased specialized training and continuous professional development, and clearer legal mandates granting police departments authority in cyber defense within the individual state police laws.
