The Association of Municipal Companies (VKU) has urged the federal government to significantly lower the electricity tax, calling for it to be reduced to the European minimum level. This appeal came ahead of coalition negotiations involving the CDU/CSU and SPD.
According to a VKU spokesperson speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, the coalition would be wise to utilize anticipated budgetary space-which is expected from the elimination of subsidies such as the relief premium-to target the reduction of the electricity tax.
The VKU stated that, optimally, the electricity tax for all consumers should be reduced to the European minimum. This measure, they argued, would provide reliable relief for both private households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) starting next year. The spokesperson further specified that the tax currently could potentially be lowered from 2.05 cents to as little as 0.1 cents per kilowatt-hour.
