Lower Saxony’s Minister-President, Olaf Lies of the SPD, has called for a coordinated effort involving the federal government, the states, trade unions, and employers to address the current political crisis. Speaking to the “Tagesspiegel”, Lies stated that the public perceives the federal government as struggling to make necessary decisions, pointing out the constant criticism exchanged between the CDU/CSU and the SPD. He stressed that a joint strategy is now essential, arguing that the challenges at hand are too significant for petty squabbling. “We face much more than a sum of individual problems; we are facing a crisis. In a time like this, we must act differently” Lies urged.
While acknowledging the immense pressure on federal politicians-many of whom are simultaneously party chairmen and acutely aware of polling results-Lies expressed his understanding. However, he also requested that heeded citizens, particularly those in positions of responsibility, afford the federal government more “respect”. He noted that while constant attempts to question the government are tempting, they are ultimately unhelpful. He concluded by suggesting a pause: “Perhaps we can all dial back the relentless public criticism for a while”.
