Facing a strained budgetary situation and accumulating fresh tax losses, The Left party has strongly criticized the Federal government, demanding comprehensive structural reforms. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” the party’s budget policy spokesperson, Dietmar Bartsch, stated that the instability is not primarily caused by the Iran War, but rather by a federal government that is focused inward rather than addressing the country’s genuine core problems.
Bartsch criticized the Finance Minister for covering multi-billion-euro budget gaps using what he termed artificial or theoretical postings. According to the spokesperson, this situation is a “house of cards” that will not last.
The party argues that Germany urgently requires structural reforms, particularly a meaningful tax overhaul. This reform is not simply meant to plug temporary budget deficiencies, but rather to ease the financial burden on working people and impose a heavier tax load on large fortunes and inheritances. Bartsch emphasized that this proposed overhaul should be viewed not as an ideological project, but as an urgently necessary stimulus for the economy.
These demands come as economic experts predict that tax revenue from the federal government, states, and municipalities will fall by an estimated 17.8 billion euros, according to the Working Group for Tax Estimates 2026.
