The Federal Data Protection Commissioner, Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider, recently voiced strong criticism regarding the use of facial recognition technologies. Speaking to the dts news agency in Berlin on Wednesday, she warned that these methods are not only “prone to errors” but also pose significant challenges from a data protection legal perspective. She stressed the vital necessity of developing alternative methods that are less invasive and inherently more secure.
According to Specht-Riemenschneider, this emphasis on developing such alternatives-and consequently abandoning facial scanning procedures-represents a positive opportunity. The Commissioner expressed hope that data-minimal approaches can be developed for core functions such as age verification and identity confirmation. She concluded by emphasizing that protecting user privacy requires diligently avoiding the unnecessary collection and processing of biometric data.
