Nouripour Slams Germany's Reactive Iran Policy Against Wadephul

The Green Party’s Deputy President and foreign policy expert, Omid Nouripour, launched sharp criticism against the German government’s policy towards Iran, specifically targeting the role of Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul.

According to Nouripour, the primary flaw in Germany’s current approach is that the government is merely reactive, simply watching what the United States and Iran are doing. “We are responding to events, rather than developing our own initiatives as European states, who are massively affected, to return to the negotiating table” Nouripour told the TV channel “Welt” on Tuesday.

He voiced particular dissatisfaction with Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul. Nouripour stated, “I have to say that I really miss the German Foreign Minister. The highest emotion he is giving off so far is powerfully expressing his concerns. This is not initiative; it does not bring us back to the negotiation table”.

Nouripour also commented on the Chancellor’s recent stance regarding potential deals with Trump, arguing that while it can be debated if the Chancellor’s clear position on Trump’s cards was tactically astute, the reality is that the Iranian side feels victorious and more powerful. “They are currently trying to dictate the terms” he added.

Regarding the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, Nouripour asserted that the current environment is “beyond acceptable”. He emphasized that the firing of civilian freighters by Iran is completely unacceptable. While accepting that there is no official ceasefire, he argued it is unnecessary to reject the term entirely, as doing so would plunge the region back into war.
