Following the rampage in Leipzig that resulted in two fatalities, police released further details on Tuesday. In addition to the 63-year-old woman and the 77-year-old man who died, six other individuals, aged between 21 and 87, were injured. Among the injured are two seriously wounded people: a 75-year-old man and an 84-year-old woman. Furthermore, more than 80 people required support due to the trauma of the event.
According to investigators, the suspect had previously been in police custody in 2026 for suspicion of threats and “defamatory acts within his social environment”. These prior incidents are still under police review. Separately, on April 17th, a police operation was initiated following a call from the 33-year-old male. Consequently, due to his mental state and with his consent, he was admitted to a specialized hospital for treatment until April 29th. The suspect has no entries in the Central Registry, nor are there any other pending investigations or criminal proceedings against him with the public prosecutor’s office.
The investigations are ongoing, handled by the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Leipzig and the Leipzig Police Department, concerning allegations of double murder and multiple attempted murders. The suspect was placed under preliminary arrest yesterday by order of the Public Prosecutor’s Office. The investigating judge at the District Court must still determine the continuation of this detention upon request from the prosecutor’s office.
Details surrounding the presumed motive for the crime remain a focus of the ongoing investigation. To date, there is no indication of a political or religious bias. Meanwhile, forensic police work at the crime scene is still taking place, and the affected areas remain closed to the public.
