Sahra Wagenknecht is calling for the resignation of the current federal government. Writing in the “Welt” (Wednesday edition), she addressed the black-red coalition, which includes Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) and Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil (SPD), noting that they have been in power for a year. She stated, “Friedrich Merz has been in office for a year, and one can only hope that the citizens are spared from a second [major crisis]”. Wagenknecht claimed that Merz and Klingbeil initiated a political direction that was not selected by the public and that threatens to ruin the country and its people.
According to the former BSW leader, Merz significantly underperforms his predecessor, Olaf Scholz (SPD), in both competence and popularity. She pointed out that the Chancellor’s approval ratings had recently hit a low point in polls. Wagenknecht commented that ending this “stagnant coalition” would be the best course of action for Germany before the damage it causes becomes irreversible.
Instead of simply opposing the government, Wagenknecht proposed a radical alternative: a “new path for democracy”. She advocated for a cabinet composed of expert professionals who are close to the concerns of the general public. This cabinet, she suggested, would need to find its majority support in parliament based on substance rather than party affiliation, thereby avoiding the exclusion of any single faction. This arrangement, which she called a “Citizens’ Government” (“Bürgerregierung”), would offer the best chance for the true political will of the citizenry to be realized.
The article concludes by mentioning the political recent history of her own party. The Wagenknecht Party narrowly missed the five-percent threshold in the federal election in February 2025. Furthermore, in February 2026, the party filed a lawsuit with the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe, demanding a recount.
