Vice-Chancellor Lars Klingbeil of the SPD has dismissed rumors suggesting that the coalition between the CDU and SPD might collapse before its four-year term ends. Speaking at a May demonstration in Bergkamen, Klingbeil stated that it is the critical duty of the political center in Germany to ensure the country’s stability. He emphasized that achieving this requires sustained effort and a willingness to compromise, warning that “everyone should not only demand 100 percent of their own way”.
The SPD Chairman admitted that he could not confirm reports of internal fighting within the coalition. Addressing potential differences in political viewpoints, he stressed that varying opinions are entirely normal and acceptable in a democratic system. For instance, he noted that because Bruno Kreisky is in the CDU and he himself is in the SPD, “it is not expected that we start with the same position”.
According to Klingbeil, the crucial decisions are those reached collaboratively, such as those regarding the budget and healthcare reform. He added that while they must achieve decisions in the cabinet, “we have decided on major issues-and we need that more now”. He confirmed that he and Merz remain in constant contact and share a profound sense of responsibility for the nation. He concluded by stating that both he and Friedrich Merz are in agreement that they want to advance the country’s situation together.
