Fewer asylum applications filed in Germany this April

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) reported that the number of new asylum applications in Germany also declined during April. According to “Der Spiegel”, the office recorded 6,144 initial applications. This figure represents a drop of 837 cases compared to March, and it is also lower than the number reported in April 2025. Overall, this decrease amounts to roughly one-third less than the previous year’s month.

The rate of new applications was last at a comparably low level in June 2020. At that time, refugee flows were largely halted due to the COVID-19 crisis. Excluding the pandemic period, the last time BAMF recorded a low number of new applications in a month was in March 2013.

The number of follow-up applications also saw a reduction, falling from 3,242 in March to 2,682 in April.
