SPD Chief Confident Working Together To Keep Coalition Government Going

Matthias Miersch, the SPD parliamentary group chair, expressed confidence that the center-right and socialist coalition will continue its work together, despite the public disagreements that have marked recent weeks. Speaking to the “Rheinische Post”, Miersch stated that he is firm in his belief that the government will remain stable, adding, “I am very sure that Friedrich Merz and Lars Klingbeil still have a solid working relationship”.

Miersch stressed that all members of the government understand their mutual responsibility. He acknowledged that disagreements are part of the process, mentioning that he and Jens Spahn often debate major issues. However, he emphasized that “we have built up a very stable foundation of trust over the past year”. This assurance comes despite the fact that Deputy Chancellor Klingbeil previously admitted that the meeting between him and Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) at the Villa Borsig in mid-April was reportedly loud.

Looking at the coalition’s progress, Miersch noted that they have successfully initiated several major reforms that previous administrations failed to achieve. These include establishing a 500-billion-euro special fund, updating the military service law, and developing a unified asylum policy. While acknowledging that heated debate is inherent to such significant topics-especially given that the coalition comprises three distinct parties-Miersch concluded by saying that this level of discussion is simply a natural part of the process.
