Minister Slams Sugar Tax Deal Calling It Unsustainable

Agricultural Minister Alois Rainer (CSU) has publicly criticized the government’s plan to introduce a sugar tax. Speaking to the Funke Media Group’s newspapers, the CSU politician reiterated his long-held skepticism regarding taxes placed on food aimed at influencing consumer behavior. According to Rainer, his stance on this issue remains unchanged.

While remaining critical, Rainer stipulated that should the decision move forward, it is crucial that any potential revenue generated be specifically and targetedly dedicated to the healthcare system. Despite his reservations, Rainer confirmed that he will not veto the measure. He concluded by stating that “a democracy lives on compromises”.
