Union Weighs Bannmeile Near Reichstag Amid Rising Protest Concerns

In light of the increasing frequency and intensity of protests around the Reichstag and the Chancellery, Günter Krings, the CDU deputy parliamentary group chairman, has expressed readiness for establishing a restricted zone (Bannmeile) in the Berlin government district.

Speaking to the “Rheinische Post” on Monday, Krings argued that while public demonstrations must continue to be visible to political figures, the state must draw clear boundaries. He emphasized that these boundaries are necessary when disruptions, blockades, or acts of intimidation impede the work of the parliament and the government.

Given the rise in aggressive protest methods, the question of whether the current level of protection is adequate has become urgent. According to the legal policy expert, he believes it is right to consider much stricter requirements and an expansion of existing protection zones.

Currently, the Berlin government district does not have an officially designated restricted zone; it instead operates under regulated districts, which generally permit public assembly provided the activity does not disrupt the constitutional bodies. This general permission applies even when the Bundestag is not in session. However, the source reported that discussions about implementing a restricted zone are already taking place within government circles.
