Dirk Wiese, the parliamentary head of the SPD parliamentary group, contradicted Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) during an interview with RTL and ntv, arguing that the statutory pension must be viewed as more than just a basic safety net for old age. Wiese asserted, “People must be able to rely on the statutory pension”. According to the SPD politician, the public pension insurance is a vital form of security for many people across the country, noting that many have contributed to it using “work earned with their own hands”. He emphasized, “This cannot only be a basic safety net; one must be able to rely on the statutory pension”.
Despite his strong defense of the current system, Wiese acknowledged the possibility of pension system development. He mentioned that the introduction of the Riester pension, a new private, capital-funded retirement insurance, represents a proper and important model. Wiese also expressed his willingness to further strengthen and expand the second pillar of company pension schemes. Furthermore, he advocated for broadening the base of contributors, stating his strong support for Members of Parliament contributing to the system. He also suggested questioning whether neighboring countries are implementing effective pension insurance models, citing Austria and the Netherlands as examples of countries that have implemented “bold models”.
Regarding upcoming discussions, Wiese pointed to the pension commission established by the coalition, which is scheduled to present its findings on June 30th. He concluded that it would be beneficial to allow the commission to finalize its work before subsequently considering its outcomes.
