Stegner Slams Chancellor's Warnings As Unproductive

The calls from CDU leader Friedrich Merz to the party’s coalition partner, the SPD, are meeting with resistance. During an interview with the “Tagesspiegel” SPD parliamentary representative Ralf Stegner stated that the chancellor’s public criticisms are “somewhat unusual and counterproductive”. Stegner pointed out a perceived contradiction, noting that Merz recently advocated for the parties to handle all issues privately and present a united front publicly. He suggested it would be prudent for Merz to follow his own advice.

The former SPD official added that the SPD is not intimidated by Merz’s statements, asserting that politics is a form of combat sport. Regarding policy, the SPD’s primary objection, as conveyed to the Union, is that they do not support any reforms that they believe will negatively affect the general public. This comments followed Merz’s attempt to pressure the SPD on Monday evening to commit to more decisive reforms. Merz himself had stated that he planned to have a “very serious conversation” with the coalition partner later that evening.
