Donald Trump announced new negotiations with Iran, stating on his “Truth Social” platform on Sunday that a U.S. delegation would be in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Monday evening to conduct the talks. He accused Iran of violating the ceasefire in the Strait of Hormuz and targeting ships. Trump added that the United States plans to offer a “very fair and reasonable deal”. He expressed hope that Iran would accept the offer, warning that if they refused, “the United States will destroy every single power plant and every single bridge in Iran”.
Recently, there had been confusion regarding the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. While Iran had intended to lift its blockade, the decision was reversed after the U.S. failed to lift its own sea blockade targeting vessels heading to Iranian ports. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically vital waterway through which a considerable amount of global oil transport passes. Control over this passage has extensive geopolitical implications and has already caused fluctuations in oil prices over the past weeks.
