Government Boost Fuels EV Chargers in Apartment Buildings

The Federal Ministry of Transport has launched a new funding program aimed at establishing charging infrastructure within and near multi-family residential buildings. According to the ministry’s announcement on Wednesday, the goal is to improve convenient access to charging points for the residents of approximately 20 million units living in such buildings. These residences account for about nine million parking spaces, many of which are currently not equipped with charging infrastructure.

The program supports both the purchase and the installation of private charging systems, including wallboxes and all necessary technical components. Furthermore, funding is available for grid connections and essential structural modifications. Applications can be submitted immediately. Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder (CDU) stated that this initiative is crucial for advancing electric mobility and enhancing its usability. The funding is intended to integrate e-mobility charging infrastructure into the daily lives of multi-family dwellers.

The total funding pool allocated by this program reaches up to 500 million euros. Each individual charging point must have a maximum charging capacity of 22 kW. Eligible applicants include homeowner associations, small and medium-sized enterprises, private owners of rented residential properties, residential construction companies, and real estate companies with a substantial housing portfolio. Applications from the first two groups will be processed immediately upon receipt, while a competitive procedure has been established for companies with large housing portfolios.
