Bundestag vice‑president Omid Nouripour, a Green Party member, condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to extend the ultimatum imposed on the Iranian regime and warned that the Strait of Aden could be shut down.
He told the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Saturday edition) that the Iranian regime had “pre‑planned this war for decades with scripts” and had never actually used the level of escalation that has been threatened. “They could, for example, close the Strait of Aden through their allies in Yemen, which would mean that not only oil would no longer arrive, but also no goods from East Asia. In that case they would have put a chokehold on the entire world economy” he said.
Nouripour argued that the regime’s main strength lies in the lack of a coherent plan on the part of the United States. “By far” he asserted. “Ultimatums are issued, then extended again, point‑by‑point plans are presented. The U.S. government had no strategy when it started the war, nor does it know how to get out. I can’t describe it any other way-it’s starkly grim”.
According to the Green politician, the Iranian regime is not weakened. “There are no indications that the core of the regime is fundamentally shaken. While that core may have shrunk, it remains very hardened. And most importantly, the regime increasingly believes it can win the war” Nouripour concluded.
