North Germany’s Bars Cost More Than the South, Meoton Reports

dining prices in Northern Germany and the city-states are higher than elsewhere in the country..

A study by the gastronomy-data start‑up Meoton, presented to “Der Spiegel”, shows that in Thuringia a dish typically costs 10.91 €, while in the tourist‑literate Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern it averages 13.09 €. Despite higher purchasing power, prices in Bavaria are still only around 11.65 €.

Beverages average no more than 4.65 € in Thuringia and Baden‑Württemberg, but rise to 5.13 € in Hamburg and Schleswig‑Holstein.

Co‑founder Christian Haese explained: “Among other reasons, the higher rents in large cities ultimately show up on the menu”. Meoton had automatically read menus from roughly 30,000 establishments-from fast‑food stalls to gourmet restaurants. From these data it calculated the median prices for 12 dishes and 14 drinks, including classics such as schnitzel, tiramisu and beer.
