CDU Pledges 2027 Tax Relief for Small and Medium Incomes

Steffen Bilger, the parliamentary manager of the CDU/CSU group in the Bundestag, has announced plans to provide tax relief for low‑ and middle‑income earners starting in 2027. He told the news portal T‑Online that the party expects to have a solid proposal ready by mid‑year and aims to implement it quickly. “The relief would kick in at the start of the next year and reach people’s wallets” Bilger said.

Bilger added that whether the reform will also raise the threshold for the top tax rate to €80,000 remains to be seen. The SPD is ready to accept such a change but wants to impose higher taxes on very high earners. When asked whether the Union would discuss this with its partner, Bilger said the CDU/CSU prefers an open debate within the party. “But it is clear: as the Union we do not want to raise taxes; we want to lower them”. Accordingly, any agreement would be reflected in the coalition contract.

On the issue of fiscal consolidation, Bilger expressed a desire for “more ambition” in savings efforts. He expects ministries to present concrete proposals during the budget planning process.
