The Left party in the Bundestag is demanding a halt to deportations to Iran and the creation of safe and legal escape routes from the war zone to Germany. Clara Bünger, an interior policy expert for the Left and a contributor to the Funke Media Group, said: “People seeking protection must be able to approach German diplomatic missions in neighbouring states, where they should receive uncomplicated humanitarian visas for safe entry”. For this to happen, she insists the federal government has to reinstate entry under Paragraph 22 of the Residence Act. The Union-SPD coalition had stopped the humanitarian resettlement programme.
Bünger underscored that many people in Iran now rightly want to bring themselves and their families to safety, as the Islamic Republic’s regime oppresses the population on a massive scale. She cautioned that the “illegality under international law” of the country’s attacks threatens even more lives. She warned that the heavily fortified borders of the European Union would cause many asylum seekers’ escape attempts to end in death. ”Therefore, as the Left, we demand safe and legal flight routes” she added.
So far neither EU agencies nor the German government observe large‑scale outflows from Iran. At the same time aid organisations highlight that humanitarian supplies in the region are becoming increasingly precarious. According to the United Nations, roughly 30,000 people in Lebanon have been registered in state‑designated emergency shelters because of ongoing Israeli air raids.
CDU interior politician Alexander Throm said: “At the moment I see no mass exodus toward Europe”. He also noted: “We must remain vigilant. It is crucial to support Iran’s neighbouring countries in taking in asylum seekers, also through the EU”.
