German Teachers Push Iran War Back Into Classroom Debate

The German Teachers’ Union says the Iran‑war should be addressed in schools.
Stefan Düll, president of the union, told the “Rheinische Post” on Thursday that the topic “can and should have a place in the classroom”. He added that any engagement must always be age‑appropriate and handled with great empathy.

Whether and how the war is incorporated depends largely on the students’ lived reality. “A teacher should decide only based on the specific circumstances of the class” Düll explained.
He warned that it can be challenging to explain complex political contexts to children who have no prior knowledge. In such cases, he advised focusing on reliable facts instead of making evaluations or delving into intricate geopolitical relations.
